  Gig Harbor Police Bicycle Patrol

An innovative part of the Gig Harbor Police Department is the Bicycle Patrol Unit. This unit is comprised of specially trained officers who utilize customized mountain bikes to patrol the city. These officers are certified through a course offered by the International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA).

The use of mountain bikes for patrol is quiet, cost-efficient, and effective. This method of patrol bridges the gap between automobile and foot patrol.

Our bicycle patrol officers can be seen at many public events such as parades and festivals held throughout the city.

This program serves as an effective physical fitness tool for our officers.  In August, two Gig Harbor Bicycle Patrol Officers completed the 176-mile Courage Classic Bike Ride through the Cascade Mountains.  This event is a charity fund-raiser for Children's Hospital and our officers raised over $750.00 toward this cause.

Special equipment allows these "bike cops" to work after dark as a deterrent to nighttime thefts.

The Gig Harbor Police Department currently has 5 trained bicycle officers.  You may contact our Bicycle Patrol Unit by e-mail or phone:
Officer Ray Jahn or phone (253) 851-2236.
